Before the invention and adoption of printing, books were copied by hand, so they were expensive and rare. During the Middle Ages, the churches, universities and wealthy nobles could afford books, which were often chained to prevent their theft. The first books used parchment or calfskin for pages, but later were replaced with paper.
Later Middle Ages, books began to be produced with printing blocks, where a relief image of an entire page was carved, ink can be added, reproducing multiple copies of that page. However, creating an entire book was a process that is demanding, requiring those hand carved printing blocks per page.
